Here's another photograph taken at an amusement park. Again, the photographer seems to know his subjects, as they've come outside to pose for him (or her). What I love, and I do mean love, about this photograph is the juxtaposition of the shooting gallery (or whatever it is) and the photo gallery. The shooting gallery signs make a wonderful comment on the photo gallery, and on the whole process and idea of taking photographs. In my writing classes, they used to warn us about "writing about writing"; saying things like, "as I'm about to tell you." Here's a photograph that's about taking photographs, at least in its own subtle way. It's possible that the photographer just happened to know the guys at the shooting gallery, and the guys at the photo gallery, and got them to come out and pose together, without really giving the wonderful back-and-forth between the two much thought. Or perhaps the photographer had his tongue firmly in cheek. Either way, it's a great photograph.
As happens so often with snapshots, this one has a corner crease, and a bit of wear. If it came out of the 50 cent box, then the return on investment for this photo would be significant. Or it could have come from the South Carolina guy. I'm thinking that this one and the other carny photo came out of the 50 cent box. If I had found anything else that day, it would have been a great day.

#12 - My Favorite Mistake

The word "mistake" would never come to mind today when I think of my dear Kirby.
However 7 years ago, I was sure I thought that very word (and probably more than once).

My youngest daughter was in 5th grade when she begged and begged for a dog.
You know the pleas - - "I promise, I'll take care of it. I'll walk it. I'll feed it."

Of course, I eventually gave in.

However, at that time I had never had an indoor dog and knew nothing about house training one. I kept thinking of all the negatives and had no idea of what the tremendous positives would turn out to be.

Kirby is never far from my side. We walk together every morning and he waits patiently as I shoot photos of flowers or barns. When I am on the computer, he is usually not far from the desk (I'm turning now to see where he is - and of course, he is right behind me on a nearby chair). When I'm in the kitchen cooking, he is there at my feet and I call him my "little sous chef." When I watch television, he curls up on my lap. At night, in bed, he is snled in behind my legs.

When I have to leave the house for any period of time, Kirby watches me go from the window of the front door. His eyes as they watch me leave never fail to tug at my heartstrings. And the greeting that I receive from him when I return home never fails to make me feel completely and utterly loved.
